Somewhere between a hotel and a clinic sits the recovery house — and for certain patients it is the single best money in the whole budget, while for others it is an expensive answer to a question they do not have. Here is what these places actually are, what they cost in typical 2026 terms, and — because the term “recovery house” is not a regulated category — how to vet one with the same rigor you applied to your surgeon.
What a recovery house actually is
A guesthouse or converted residence purpose-built around post-operative guests, concentrated in the surgical districts of Medellín, Bogotá, and Cali. The core proposition: you recover surrounded by people whose job is recovering you, instead of alone in a hotel room. A well-run house typically bundles:
- Nursing presence — scheduled checks, medication reminders, wound-care assistance, and a trained set of eyes on warning signs
- Meals designed for healing (the protein-forward, hydration-heavy protocol from Stage 7, handled for you)
- Transport to and from follow-up appointments — sometimes airport pickup too
- Recovery equipment — adjustable beds, procedure-specific pillows and supports
- Coordination with your surgical team, often in both languages
- Company — other patients on the same arc, which sounds minor until day four, when it is not
Who actually needs one
Honest triage, because the answer is not everyone:

How to vet one — the part that matters most
“Recovery house” is a marketing term, not a license category. Nothing stops anyone with a spare bedroom and an Instagram account from using it, so your questions do the regulating:
- “Who provides the medical oversight, and what are their credentials?” A house advertising “nursing care” should name actual nurses. Vague answers about “trained staff” are your cue to keep looking.
- “What is the staff-to-guest ratio overnight?” Warning signs do not keep business hours. Someone qualified should be on site, awake, at 3 a.m.
- “What exactly is included — and what costs extra?” In writing. Meals, transport, supplies, extra nursing time.
- “Which surgeons and clinics do you regularly work with?” Established houses have established relationships and will name them. Then close the loop: ask your surgeon's office if they know the house. Surgeons hear everything about the local recovery ecosystem, and many keep an informal blacklist.
- “What happens if I have a complication at your house?” The right answer names your surgeon's protocol, the transfer hospital, and who calls whom. The wrong answer is improvisation.
- “Can I see the actual room?” Real photos or a video walkthrough of the room you will occupy — not the best room, yours. While you are at it: elevator or ground floor? Stairs after abdominal surgery are nobody's friend.
A recovery house supports recovery; it does not direct it. Medication changes, wound concerns, and clearance decisions belong to your surgical team, full stop. A house that freelances medical decisions — adjusting your meds, overruling your surgeon's massage protocol, “their own” healing regimens — has crossed from hospitality into practicing medicine, and you should not be there.

Your surgeon's office is also the single best source of recommendations — ask which houses their patients use and start your vetting there rather than from search results.
